A Torch of Omniscience (Tibetan: Namkhyen Drönme) is a highly respected and detailed commentary on the Longchen Nyingtik Ngöndro (the preparatory exercises of the Longchen Nyingtik cycle within the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism).

It was written by Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo (1820–1892), one of the most prominent enlightened masters of the 19th century and co-founder of the non-sectarian Rimé movement.

Core of the text
The title literally means “A Torch of Omniscience”. The text functions as a clear guide (a torch) that leads the practitioner through the deep, esoteric meaning of the Ngöndro, with the ultimate goal of achieving the omniscient state of Buddhahood. The description covers the two main phases of the Ngöndro:

1. The general or outer preparations: The contemplations that turn the mind towards the Dharma (the four thoughts: the preciousness of human life, impermanence, karma, and the defects of samsara).

2. The extraordinary or inner preparations: The actual practices such as taking refuge, awakening Bodhicitta (the enlightenment mind), Vajrasattva purification, Mandala offerings, and Guru Yoga.
